First GlacierXperience-Lab for students on the Dachsteinglaciers

In Kooperation mit :

At the end of June and the beginning of July (July 1st – 3rd), students had the opportunity to explore scientific phenomena on the glacier for the first time. Sponsored by the Dachstein Cable Car, the students conducted experiments directly on the glacier. Over four days, four school classes were able to perform experiments and investigate various phenomena related to the glacier and the alpine landscape. They examined the glacier’s microbiome, the cause of colored stones, and the black layer that covers the glacier ice in summer. In one particularly impressive experiment, students learned about carbon dioxide sinks and the extent to which glacial rivers can store carbon dioxide.

Whether in bright sunshine or in fog, ice, rain, and snow, the students explored phenomena such as the black layer on the ice. Another highlight was the visit to the ice palace, where they got a glimpse inside the glacier and admired the different layers of ice. The influence of humans on the glacier was also discussed. Inspired by the newly formed snow crystals on the ceiling at the entrance, the students used a thermal imaging camera to search for clues. This allowed them to directly and practically understand the information sign at the entrance (https://spottingscience.at/icecold/).
