Glaciers at the beginning and end of summer

The appearance of glaciers changes significantly over the summer. During warm summers, the protective snow cover melts away, revealing the underlying ice of the glacier. This allows us to see the glacier’s structure, with its crevasses becoming more visible. It also becomes evident that the glacier is moving and flowing downhill. This phenomenon can be observed quite clearly at Steindalsbreen. Hier werden Fotos des Steindalsbreen zu Beginn des Sommers im Juni und gegen Ende des Sommers Ende August gegenübergestellt.

The photos of the Hallstatt Glacier were taken at the end of June and in mid-August. You can already see the heavily melted snow cover. However, remnants of old snow are still visible.
