New Educational Booklet for exploring the Steindalsbreen

We are excited to announce the release of Explore Steindalen: An Idea Book for Teachers, Guides, and Nature Enthusiasts, authored by Jan Höper from the Department of Education at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. This 2024 publication is designed to inspire outdoor learning and exploration in the unique Steindalen region of the Lyngen Alps.

The booklet is a result of collaboration within the GlacierXperience project, an EU-funded initiative aimed at raising awareness of glaciers and climate change through hands-on educational activities. This partnership has allowed for the development of field-based educational resources, bringing students and the public closer to understanding the dynamic natural processes shaping our landscapes. Explore Steindalen aligns perfectly with the goals of GlacierXperience, offering teachers and guides innovative ways to engage learners with nature and the environment.

Key Features of the Booklet:

  • Detailed hiking routes through Steindalen, with geological and environmental points of interest.
  • Suggested activities for outdoor learning, including the study of rock formations, river dynamics, and the effects of climate change on glaciers.
  • A special focus on the visible impacts of glacier retreat, linked to research and data from the GlacierXperienceproject.
  • Exploration of Steindalsbreen, one of the most accessible glaciers in Lyngen, showcasing the practical use of scientific concepts in real-world settings.
  • Practical ideas for teachers to enhance classroom learning with outdoor experiences.

By building on the research and educational insights gathered during the GlacierXperience expeditions, the booklet provides an invaluable resource for educators to bring lessons on climate change, geology, and ecological succession to life in the field.

Whether you are a teacher looking to enrich your curriculum with field-based lessons or a guide aiming to provide insightful tours in nature, Explore Steindalen offers a wealth of ideas and inspiration.

This project also builds upon Geoffrey D. Corner’s earlier guide, Turen går til Steindalen, expanding on the region’s geological and environmental significance through a modern, interactive approach.

The booklet is now available for download. We encourage all educators, nature guides, and outdoor enthusiasts to explore Steindalen and share in the wonders of this spectacular region.
