First day in the Outdoor-Glacier-Lab

On June 26, 2024, we visited the Dachstein Glacier together with students and teachers from BG/BRG Klusemann. This marked the first opportunity to test the newly established outdoor glacier laboratory. At the same time, it served as a valuable trial run in preparation for additional class visits planned for the following week.

In collaboration with the Open Laboratory and the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Graz, the students created communication materials designed to make the topic of glaciers accessible to a general audience.

The group was further supported by scientists from the University of Graz: Bettina Halwachs-Wenzl, Sandro Keller, Sabine Kienesberger-Feist, Ariane Pessentheiner, Heide Beranek-Knauer, Lucas Eder, and Hildrun Walter.

A key focus of this joint effort was the exchange of ideas for potential future projects, should the initiative continue. Additionally, microbial samples were collected from the glacier for further research.

The Glacier Laboratory is supported by the Dachstein Cable Car, which, among other things, offers free cable car rides.
