New Scientific Publication in JCOM

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new peer-reviewed scientific article authored by members of the GlacierXperience project team. The paper, “Glaciers as Classrooms: Designing an Outdoor Lab as a Learning Space on Ice,” presents the educational concept, design process, and implementation of our project’s innovative learning environment.

The publication focuses on the development of the GlacierXperience Outdoor Lab and its integration with a complementary digital learning environment. It describes how glaciers can be transformed into structured educational spaces where students explore glaciological and climate-related processes through guided, hands-on scientific activities directly on the ice. The article also outlines how immersive digital tools and virtual environments extend learning beyond the field site, enabling preparation, reflection, and broader accessibility.

The study highlights the iterative research-based design approach behind GlacierXperience, including pilot implementations with school groups and continuous refinement of learning activities. It demonstrates how combining real-world field experiences with digital learning supports deeper conceptual understanding, fosters engagement with climate science, and strengthens climate literacy.
