At the 2024 European Conference on Research in Chemical Education (ECRICE), Philipp Spitzer from the University of Graz delivered a presentation on the innovative GlacierXperience project. His talk, titled “Science Lessons from the Eternal Ice: Glaciers as a Gateway to Education for Sustainable Development,” showcased how glaciers, as symbols of climate change, can serve as a powerful educational tool.
Spitzer emphasized the project’s role in developing a 360° digital learning environment, featuring interactive experiments and virtual reality options. This initiative offers students a chance to explore glaciers and understand climate impacts, even if direct access to these environments is limited. One of the key aspects discussed was the project’s focus on addressing common misconceptions about glaciers, as well as the inclusion of model experiments that explore the effects of permafrost melting and its impact on water quality.
