Formation of crevasses

Xperiment

Material:

  • Kinetic Sand
  • Surface with varying slopes (e.g., bowl, baking tray, …)
  • Use some of the kinetic sand and shape it into a flat surface.
  • Now place the sand on the surface with varying slopes.
    Observe how the crevasses form at the upper end.
  • To see how longitudinal crevasses form, you can press down on the lower flat part of the glacier with your thumb. Longitudinal crevasses will form at the edges due to the expansion.
