Black Ice in the sun

Material:

  • 2 petri dishes
  • Insulating base (e.g. Styrofoam)
  • Scale
  • stopwatch
  • possibly infrared lamp

 

  • Coal dust (e.g. ground barbecue charcoal)
  • Ice cubes or crushed ice
  1. Find a sunny spot or use an infrared lamp and place your insulating pad on the ground – make sure it is upright and the sun can shine on it.
  2. Add approx. 10 g of ice to each petri dish.
    Sprinkle the ice in a Petri dish with the coal dust so that the ice is covered.
  3. Place the two Petri dishes on the surface in the sun.
  4. Stop the time until the ice cream has melted.
