Outdoor GlacierLab

In Kooperation mit :

At the end of June and the beginning of July (1–3 July), students once again had the opportunity—now for the second year—to explore scientific phenomena directly on the glacier. Sponsored by the Dachstein cable car, they conducted their experiments right on the glacier.

In July 2024 and 2025, a total of 10 school classes took part over four days each year, carrying out various experiments and investigating phenomena related to the glacier and the alpine environment. They explored topics such as the glacier microbiome, the causes of colored stones, and the dark layer that covers the glacier ice in summer.

In a particularly impressive experiment, students learned more about carbon dioxide sinks and the extent to which glacial streams can store CO₂.

Labbook

The lab manual includes all the experiments carried out. It also provides brief explanations and links to scientific publications, carefully selected to be accessible for students. The level of difficulty is indicated using snowflakes (one snowflake = easy to three snowflakes = difficult).
